SameSame today reports that the Equal Love member who wrote an open letter complaining about the vitriolic messages slipped into Marriage Equality rallies from the socialist
alliance alternative … has been sacked:
The marriage equality activist in Brisbane who publicly spoke up against the Socialist Alternative’s ‘Hanging Abbott’ banner at Saturday’s Equal Love protest has now been expelled from the rally organising committee.
Same Same, 2013-11-28, “Equal love dumps critic of ‘hanging Abbott’ banner” Miles Heffernan.
The SameSame article went on to say:
Equal Love Brisbane Convenor Kat Henderson reportedly calling his behaviour in writing the open letter “a disgrace.”
Members of the Socialist Alternative at the meeting voted as a bloc against him staying on with Equal Love.
Equal Love Brisbane convener Kat Henderson was not immediately available for comment, however when Same Same phoned Equal Love spokesperson Louise O’Shea, we copped an earful. She told us that reporting this issue was “furthering an attack on the very people that have made the equality movement what it is.”
The real disgrace, of course, is the parasitic socialist
alliance alternative that has latched onto the cause of marriage equality, insisting they own it, insisting no-one is more invested in the cause of marriage equality than themselves, and insisting that no-one ever dare criticise them for doing so.
The rose coloured glasses of the socialist
alliance alternative forgets that people who marched in the 70s for gay rights had to keep their faces covered to avoid being persecuted by their union affiliated employers. Or, more recently, that a very loud voice in the derailing of marriage equality within the ALP came from … a trade union representative, Joe de Bruyn, the National Secretary of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees, who has vehemently fought against marriage equality during Labor conferences, and so on.
We’re never going to win this argument by turning it into a war against the conservative parties. The UK and New Zealand have both proven in the last 12 months how important it is to have conservatives on side.
Depicting them hanging from a noose, or wearing a “Fuck Tony Abbott” shirt, or a “Abbott Hater” shirt isn’t going to get us anywhere.
And that’s the thing: if this is about Equal Love, why are they promoting one-sided hate?
Well that’s easy: because they’ve suborned the marriage equality movement for their own political purposes. They don’t own it, they don’t own us, and it’s time they learnt that most fundamental lesson.
Otherwise, to paraphrase a friend, it’s time we start turning up to the marriage equality rallies dressed as Egyptian slaves so we can carry Socialist
Alliance Alternative masters around in their sedan chairs.
We don’t really want to do that, do we? Of course not – so it’s time to dump the toxicity in the marriage equality movement. It’s time to dump the socialist
