Picture it: Melbourne, January 9, 2015. Tony Abbott stands in front of a sports stadium filled with more than 80,000 patrons for the kick-off of the AFC, the region’s premier soccer event.
The boos were overpowering. Yet, oddly for many Australians, not unanimous.
Independent spectators noted at least 13 people in the crowd did not boo or jeer Tony Abbott as he stood like a ripe peach waiting to have his dignity plucked on the field at Etihad stadium. While senior figures in the Liberal party are rumoured to have claimed this is strong proof that Mr Abbott’s popularity is making a come-back, most believe that said patrons were simply too drunk to have noticed who was on the ground. Indeed, one such patron was quoted later as saying, “Gee, Lady GaGa certainly has put on a few pounds, hasn’t she?”
Meanwhile, it’s rumoured Julie Bishop is practicing for a potential situation when the jeering does indeed become unanimous.
