So I’m currently flying to the USA and thanks to the wonders of modern telecommunications technology I’ve got WiFi and Internet access for the flight.
We’ve come so far. But not always in the areas that matter. When I was waiting in the interminable lines in customs today in Sydney I overheard a woman saying to her traveling companion: “And when we get to Thailand, just call any local we deal with ‘Johnny’ or ‘Tom’. They all answer to that. After all it’s not as if they have real names.”
I’m not sure what Australia she comes from with an attitude like that, but it’s not my Australia. Yet there she’ll be in Thailand spreading that unique racist began form of Australian diplomacy, calling everyone Johnny, or Tom.
Apparently they don’t have real names.
How’s that national soul going?
